CCA Kitakyushu Project Gallery presents a new work by Pedro Reyes (b. 1972), who lives and works in Mexico City, Mexico.
The art of Pedro Reyes addresses the interplay between physical and social space, making tangible the invisible geometry of human relationships. Trained as an architect, Pedro Reyes often relies on models and drawing to prepare sculptures, functional objects and architecture. This design practice reveals a parallel interest in the formal properties of objects as well as the psychodinamics of public participation. His expanded notion of sculpture examines the cognitive contradictions of modern life, and the possibility of overcoming our particular crises by increasing our individual and collective degree of agency.
Pedro Reyes work has been shown at institutions throughout the world, including Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Reina Sofia, Madrid; P.S.1, New York; the Kunsthalle Wien, Vienna; Yokohama Triennale; the Shanghai Biennial; the Venice Biennale.
Counterfactual history attempts to answer what if questions. It seeks to explore historical incidents that did not happen or had an outcome which was different from that which did in fact occur. One step farther is to imagine the encounter of historical figures that didnt have the chance to meet but which we would like to bring together in a hypothetical debate. In similar fashion BABY MARX brings together the main philosophers that have advocated either for Socialism or Capitalism as a primer on the main politico-economical ideas that have shaped the World in the past two centuries. In this TV project each character (in its incarnation as a puppet) holds a different view and wishes to persuade the other of his own.
In the installation in CCA Kitakyushu the public will be able to see a theatrical teaser introducing the main characters of the story as well as the puppets that were made with a Japanese master puppet maker.
Pedro Reyes stays at CCA Kitakyushu as Professor of Research Program from December 15, 2008 to January 9, 2009.
